Pottawatomie Lighthouse
Perched on the northern tip of Rock Island in Door County, this 1858 limestone lighthouse is one of Wisconsin's oldest, sitting above a rocky bluff with sweeping views over Lake Michigan and the waters toward Green Bay. The warm, weathered stone of the tower and keeper's dwelling photographs beautifully against blue water and sky, and the surrounding shoreline offers foreground interest with jagged rocks, driftwood, and native vegetation. Wide-angle lenses work well for capturing the full structure with the lake behind it, while a longer focal length lets you isolate architectural details. Golden hour light in the morning and late afternoon wraps the limestone in warm tones, making those windows the best times to visit. Reaching the lighthouse requires a ferry to Rock Island and then a moderate hike through the park, so plan accordingly and arrive early to have the grounds to yourself.
