Pouto Lighthouse is a little red and white wooden tower sitting high on a sandstone bluff out among the dunes on Northland's west coast making it an amazing hidden gem. The views alone are worth the trip. From here you look out over rolling golden sand and the endless ocean, so everything feels wonderfully remote. Come early or late in the day when the low sun catches every ripple in the dunes and really makes them glow, plus since the point faces west you can wrap up with a lovely sunset behind the tower. The lighthouse itself is a great little subject standing bold against all that pale sand, and you will pass old shipwreck timbers in the sand on the way in that is worth stopping at for a few minutes. Getting out here is part of the fun. You can walk in along the beach with a steep climb up the dunes to reach the lighthouse or drive in with a 4x4 down the ocean beach for a bit of off road adventure. While you are shooting and exploring make sure to keep a close eye on the tides and the wind, since your route back can get cut off and you could be stuck waiting for the tide to go back out.
