Powhatan Methodist Church sits among the preserved historic buildings of Powhatan Historic State Park, a small nineteenth century river port town in northeastern Arkansas. Built in the 1870s for a Methodist congregation that had formed years earlier, it is a quaint single story wood frame church. It served the community for weddings, funerals, and worship until the mid 2010s. It has been restored by the Arkansas State Parks Dept, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The interior still has all its original furnishings including the pews and pump organ. For photographers, the white clapboard church against open sky is a classic frame. Shooting from a front corner angle lets you take in the gables, entrance, and the side windows all in one line. Early and late light warms the white boards and brings out the texture of the siding, and the elevated town site gives clean backgrounds. The church is one of several preserved buildings that make up the Historic State Park. Make sure to explore the courthouse, log house, academy, and stone jail during your shooting adventure. The only way to access the building interiors is through a guided tour, so check park hours and tour availability before hand if you want include those in your day.
