Perched on a ridgeline above the North Shore, this large Hawaiian heiau is one of the best-preserved ancient temple complexes on Oahu, offering sweeping views over Waimea Bay and the coastline stretching toward Haleiwa. The stacked lava rock enclosures spread across the hillside in rough terraces, giving you strong foreground texture to pair with the ocean and mountains behind. Shoot wide to capture the full scale of the ruins against the sky, or move in close to isolate the weathered stone walls with compressed coastal views using a short telephoto. Morning light is ideal, coming in low from the east to cast long shadows across the rock surfaces and bring out their texture. The site is a short drive up Pupukea Road from Waimea Bay and involves minimal walking on a dirt path. Respect the sacred nature of the site and avoid stepping on the stones.
