Pumpkin Hill is a striking glacial boulder field in the forests of northwestern Pennsylvania, where massive ice-age rocks have been piled into a climbable, cave-riddled formation covered in layers of colorful graffiti that adds a raw, urban texture to an otherwise wild setting. You can shoot wide to capture the full scale of the boulders against the tree canopy, or get close with a standard or macro lens to work the graffiti details and weathered rock surfaces together. The deep crevices between boulders form natural caves that hold ice well into summer, giving you a chance to shoot cool mist and icy interiors against warm afternoon light. Overcast days are ideal for reducing harsh shadows in the rocky terrain. The hike in from the road takes about five minutes on uneven ground, so wear sturdy shoes and move carefully between rocks.
