About Quoddy Head Coastal Trail
The Quoddy Head Coastal Trail leaves West Quoddy Head Light and runs southwest along the cliff tops of Quoddy Head State Park, at the eastern end of the Maine coastline. All along the trail the dark volcanic, nearly black when wet, drops down to the water in broken ledges and clean vertical faces. The trail winds past Gulliver's Hole, a narrow chasm along an old fault with the sea flowing in and out of the slot below. It then climbs up to High Ledge, a bluff about 46 m above the water, and carries on to Green Point, where a spur drops to the shore. The trail gives you a variety photogenic views as it winds along the coastline and the various features suddenly appear. On a clear day, the red cliffs of Grand Manan Island sit on the horizon in New Brunswick. Fog rolls in here often and can change the whole view in just a few minutes. These cliffs face southeast, so the rock takes light through the morning and falls into shade by mid afternoon, which makes this a great sunrise photography location. At Gulliver's Hole, a long exposure on a rising tide catches the water surging through the gap. From High Ledge, frame the cliff line running away southwest and experiment with stacking the headlands into layers. Green Point is the perfect place to get down to shore level and shoot the rock from underneath. The trail is roughly 2.1 km from the lighthouse down to the cove. Since this shooting location sits within a State Park, there is an entrance fee. Make sure to leave time to photograph the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse and the Easternmost Point of the US Mainland while you are here since both sit right beside the trail's parking area.
