About Rainbow Falls
Rainbow Falls sits tucked away just off the bridge along the Harrison East Forest Service Road. This amazing hidden gem appears from the greenery and tumbles down the mountainside before winding its way under the bridge. Cedar and fir trees fill the hillside, keeping the top of the waterfall in the shadow so the water really pops against almost black rocks and deep greens. The slowly creek fills throughout the spring with the snow melt, but then as the water level drops in the late summer and the falls change completely. Below the bridge, Slollicum Creek runs all the way down into Harrison Lake. The falls face west, so the top sits in shadow all morning and the rock face fills with direct sun through the afternoon. Ideally aim to venture out here on an overcast day if you can, because the contrast between white water and wet black rock is much harder to highlight in full sun. From the bridge, a moderate telephoto lens will allow you to feature the main drop and cut out the roadside from your frame. You can also experiment with using a wide lens to bring in the railing and the forest walls to help give a sense of scale. There is a pullout on the south side of the bridge, but keep an eye out for the logging trucks that often use this road. (Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada)
