Ram Island Lighthouse is an amazing hidden gem sitting just off the tip of Ram Island. This small brick tower stands all alone at the end of a long wooden walkway and seems to hover above the water. Add a passing lobster boat or rough water and you have the postcard version of the Maine coast. The easiest viewpoint is in Ocean Point, a quiet spot tucked away at the end of the peninsula where Shore Road follows the rocky coastline with amazing views looking out over the bay. The drive alone is worth the trip, so plan some extra time to stop and shoot along the way. The lighthouse sits under a kilometre offshore, so a long lens helps pull it close, and the rocky shoreline below the road creates a rugged foreground during low tide. Morning light comes up over open water while it is still calm creating soft, peaceful tones. The island itself is closed to visitors, but boat cruises from Boothbay Harbor does go past for a closer look if you want to capture the lighthouse and island together. Parking is free and easy along the road, just be aware of traffic while you are shooting since there isn't much space along the shoulders. Come for the lighthouse, but make sure give yourself time to just enjoy Ocean Point too. (Boothbay, Maine, United States)
