This pulloff on the hillside road above Rede gives you the classic Douro Valley scene in one frame, with rows of vines stepping down the slope in front of you to the river below and the terraced hills climbing away on both banks. The Douro itself does a lot of the work, curving off into the distance between the folds of the valley and pulling your eye through the shot, while the little Rede railway station and its cluster of red-roofed houses on the near bank give you a focal point and a sense of scale. The terraces are the real graphic element here, their contour lines wrapping the hills like stacked ribbons, and they come alive when the sun is low and rakes across the slopes from the side, throwing each step into relief. Shoot at either end of the day for that side light and for cleaner air, because this is a valley that bakes in summer and builds a soft haze through the middle of the day that flattens the distant hills, which you can see swallow the far ridges when the light goes hard. Early morning also gives you the calmest water, when the river turns glassy and mirrors the sky. A standard to short telephoto compresses the receding bends and terraces into a denser, layered shot, while a wider lens takes in the foreground vines leading down to the river. The station below is on the Douro line, so if you are patient you can time your frame with a passing train for a bit of life and scale, including the seasonal historic train that runs this route. Autumn is the standout season, when the vines turn gold and red across the whole valley, though the fresh green of spring works well too. It is a roadside stop on a bend, so pull over only where it is safe, and for a different angle there is a river beach down at Rede where you can shoot from water level.
