Reynisfjara Beach

Reynisfjara Beach - Photo by Darren Fast1 / 1

Reynisfjara is one of Iceland's most dramatic coastlines, where black volcanic sand meets pounding Atlantic surf, framed by towering basalt column formations and the striking Reynisdrangar sea stacks rising from the water offshore. The hexagonal basalt columns stacked along the cave wall at Hálsanefshellir are a signature shot; position yourself low and use a wide angle lens to emphasize their geometric patterns against stormy skies or soft overcast light. The sea stacks look best when composed from the waterline with a long exposure to smooth the incoming waves, giving you that dark, moody contrast Iceland is known for. Overcast days actually work in your favor here, keeping the light even and the colors rich. Be extremely cautious of the sneaker waves, which are powerful and unpredictable; never turn your back to the ocean, and keep your distance from the surf. (Vík, South Iceland, Iceland)
