About Río Avilés Suspension Bridge
The Río Avilés Suspension Bridge hangs across a narrow canyon in the Chacabuco Valley sector of Parque Nacional Patagonia. The Avilés has cut a deep slot in the canyon and water below is a unique milky blue from glacial melt. The deck sits roughly 40 metres above the river, giving you lots of amazing shooting options. You can also pause to shoot the bridge from the trail before you cross. From partway along, looking straight down the slot gives you the canyon walls closing in on the water. The deck does move under you, so brace against a cable or wait it out for a sharp frame. This is a location where a little patience goes a long way. Late afternoon light down the valley works better than midday, which flattens the canyon. Getting here takes most of the day and some planing. The trailhead is behind Camping Casa de Piedra and to the bridge/back is around 12km, and if you want to follow the full loop its closer to 16km. There is a fee for park entry and you have to register at the guardería. The Chacabuco sector trails open roughly October to April, it closes every year once the snow takes over.
