The Rock Arch at Cave Landing is a natural stone arch sitting in the surf zone along the rugged headland between Avila Beach and Pirate's Cove Beach on California's Central Coast. It is part of a stretch of cliffs, sea caves, and rocky coves that make this area one of the most photogenic coastal views in San Luis Obispo County. The arch is small enough to feel intimate but large enough to frame the ocean and sky through its opening, depending on how close you get to the arch. The coastline faces west, so the light lines up beautifully as the sun drops toward the horizon. You can view the arch from the cliff tops above, which is the easiest option and still gives you a solid elevated perspective with the rocky shoreline and surf below. Getting down to beach level for a closer angle is a different story. It requires descending a steep cliff using fixed ropes, then scrambling across rocks and ledges. It is not casual, and it is not safe in wet conditions or at high tide. Check tide charts before you go and do not attempt it alone. There are many viewpoints dotted along the ridge with photogenic views over the arch and surrounding coastline. The trailhead starts from a dirt parking lot at the end of Cave Landing Road, a short drive off Avila Beach Drive. The nearby Smugglers Cave (a man-made tunnel with a cliff-edge viewpoint) and Pirate's Cove Beach are also worth exploring on the same visit. (Avila Beach, San Luis Obispo County, United States)
