About Roman Amphitheater of Tarragona (Amfiteatre romà de Tarragona)

The Roman Amphitheatre of Tarragona (Amfiteatre romà de Tarragona) is an incredible 2nd century arena built into the slope between Tarragona's old town and the Mediterranean. Crowds of about 14,000 once filled it for gladiator fights and wild animal shows. The arena is a oval of warm golden stone, with Platja del Miracle beach sitting right below it. On the north side, the seating was cut straight into the bedrock. Centuries of wind and rain have worn the rows of stone benches smooth and rounded. In the middle of the arena are the ruins of an early Christian basilica and a later medieval church. For the best overview of the whole site, head up to the Balcó del Mediterrani lookout at the end of Rambla Nova. From up there the whole arena spreads out below you with the sea stretching endlessly behind it. Down in the arena's oval the clean lines of the church ruins make an amazing contrast against the curve of the stands. The golden stone warms up nicely in early morning and late afternoon light. The whole site is easily accessible with a roughly ten minute walk up from Tarragona train station. There is an admission fee to go inside, and the site is closed Mondays. The lookout with an amazing view above the whole site is on a public promenade, so capturing that view costs nothing but it does get busy so aim to come early in the day.
