About Rosalia
Rosalia is a beautiful hilltop clearing above Forchtenstein, with a small pilgrimage chapel and a tall dark cross standing out in the grass. At 748 m it's the high point of the Rosaliengebirge, and the ground drops away east into the Mattersburg basin. Burg Forchtenstein sits out there on its own wooded hill, far enough off that you'll need a longer lens and to be lucky enough for a clear day. Come at sunrise. The sun lifts out of the basin, mist pools in the low ground, and the cross goes turns into the silhouette against all of it. Experiment with using a wide lens and let the benches and picnic table give you a unique foreground of leading lines. On a clear morning the Neusiedler See turns up well off to the southeast. A small car park sits on the Rosalia Road just below the clearing, so you're walking a couple of hundred metres and will have lots of space to experiment with various compsotions. Arriving early for sunrise gives you a peaceful view looking out over the valley, usually with just a touch of mist sitting low. (Forchtenstein, Burgenland, Austria)
