Rose Blanche Lighthouse sits peacefully on the southwest coast of Newfoundland. Built in 1873 from granite quarried on site, it is the only restored granite lighthouse in Atlantic Canada. A short trail, roughly 2 km, leads from the village out to the lighthouse along the coast, with views of the Atlantic and the harbour opening up as you go. The headland setting is rugged, with dark rocky outcrops dropping toward the water and wide open sky in every direction. The lighthouse itself is compact and sits low against the landscape, which makes it easy to frame against dramatic skies or incorporate it into wider coastal compositions. The surrounding coastline is quite photogenic with its rock formations, crashing surf, and harbour views back toward the village. The site is open seasonally with a small admission fee. Fog is common on this stretch of coast and, while it can limit visibility, it also creates a moody atmosphere that is fun to experiment with capturing.
