About Rough Ridge Lookout - Grandfather Mountain
Rough Ridge is a rocky crest high on the eastern side of Grandfather Mountain. The Tanawha Trail takes you up a wooden boardwalk up and across its bare rock to a breathtaking lookout. From the walkway, Grandfather's summits rises above you, the Linn Cove Viaduct bends around the mountainside below, and ridge after ridge fades out in every direction. Benches and big boulders along the boardwalk give you places to stop and shoot. A few hundred metres of rocky switchbacks climb to the summit at where cable-lined paths lead out to a wider view. The lookout and trail have endless shooting opportunities where you can pause and experiment with how much of viaduct you want against open sky and layered ridges, or what the low heath can do in the foreground. In fall the heath turns colour weeks before the lower slopes, putting warm tones right under the cool blue of the distant ridges. Parking at milepost 302.8 is free, but the lot is small and fills quickly on weekends and in early October. This is a fragile ecosystem to make sure to stay off the plant life and on the boardwalk.
