Rue Sainte-Catherine Est

Rue Sainte-Catherine Est - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Rue Sainte-Catherine Est runs through the heart of Montreal's Gay Village, a stretch of street transformed each summer into one of the most visually striking outdoor spaces in the city. Thousands of rainbow-coloured balls hang overhead in a dense canopy between Berri and Papineau streets, creating a tunnel of colour that photographers love for its graphic, almost surreal quality. Shoot from street level looking down the corridor to compress the canopy with a telephoto, or go wide and low to exaggerate the depth and pull viewers into the scene. The hanging installations are up from late spring through summer, and overcast days work surprisingly well here by softening shadows and making the colours pop evenly. The street closes to traffic during this period, giving you freedom to move and frame without obstacles. A 24-70mm range covers most compositions comfortably. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
