Ruins - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

Mackenzie King Estate's ornamental ruins are a striking collection of architectural fragments gathered by Canada's longest-serving prime minister, who deliberately arranged salvaged stonework from demolished Ottawa buildings into picturesque compositions across his wooded Gatineau Hills property. The weathered columns, archways, and stone walls photograph beautifully against the surrounding forest, especially in soft overcast light that brings out texture without harsh shadows. Shoot in spring when fresh foliage frames the grey stone, or in autumn when warm colours contrast against the ruins. A wide-to-normal lens works well for capturing full archway frames, while a longer focal length lets you isolate details and compress the stonework against the trees behind. Position yourself low to use fallen stones as foreground interest, or step back to frame an arch with sky above. The grounds are well maintained and easy to walk, with multiple ruin clusters spread across the estate. (Gatineau, Quebec, Canada)
