Ruthven Barracks
Ruthven Barracks is a striking set of 18th-century military ruins perched on a natural mound in the Cairngorms, with the wide Spey Valley spreading out in every direction around it. The elevated position means you can shoot the barracks against dramatic highland skies, or drop low on the approach path and use the rising grassy mound to frame the walls against open sky. Wide angles work well to capture the full structure with surrounding landscape, while a mid-range focal length lets you isolate the weathered stonework and crumbling archways. Golden hour light rakes across the textured walls beautifully, and misty mornings in the valley add real atmosphere. The short walk up from the roadside car park near Kingussie takes only a few minutes, and you can circle the entire site freely, giving you north and south-facing options depending on where the light is falling.
