Ryōan-ji is best known for its iconic rock garden, but the large mirror pond at the entrance to the temple grounds is what rewards photographers most. The still water reflects surrounding maple and cherry trees beautifully, and the surface is often dotted with lily pads that add texture and depth to your compositions. Position yourself along the stone path that runs beside the pond and look for angles where the reflection of overhanging branches frames the scene naturally. Early morning is by far the best time to visit, when light is soft, mist sometimes sits on the water, and crowds are minimal. A standard zoom or short telephoto lens works well for isolating reflections and compressing the treeline. Weekday visits in autumn or during cherry blossom season offer the most dramatic color, though any clear morning will reward patience. (Kyoto, Kansai, Japan)
