About Saarschleife (Cloef Viewpoint)
Saarschleife is a unique spot where the Saar rive doubles back on itself creating a hairpin turn around the forest before carrying on north. You can look down on the whole thing from various viewpoints above high above the water. The bend fits in one frame without much trouble. There are two main spots to shoot from. The Cloef viewpoint is a short walk from the car parks and costs nothing. The treetop walk does charge admission but it ends in a spiral tower 42m above the treeline, which adds enough height to open the far end of the valley behind the loop. Both have breathtaking views that are just begging to be photographed. Morning and evening give you two different pictures. Early tn the day the sun comes up across the far ridge and the valley fills with haze, so you are working backlit with amazing layers. Later the light swings behind you and lands on the forested spur in the middle of the bend. Beech and oak make up most of that forest, so the whole bowl turns rich colours in October. Ideally try to capture it at both end of the day, the changes are worth hanging around town for. (Orscholz, Saarland, Germany)
