Built in the late 1800s by a Belgian missionary priest who painted the entire interior with vivid biblical frescoes, this small wooden church is one of the most visually striking interiors in Hawaii. Every surface of the ceiling and walls is covered in hand-painted scenes, making it a compelling subject from almost any angle inside. Shoot from the rear of the nave looking toward the altar to capture the full sweep of the painted ceiling with the pews as leading lines; a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well in the compact space. The church faces west, so morning light filtering through the windows creates a soft, even illumination without harsh shadows. Midday can wash things out, so earlier visits are preferable. The church is open to visitors and entry is free, but be respectful as it remains an active parish. (Honaunau, Hawaii, United States)
