This extraordinary stretch of the Mekong River reveals thousands of naturally carved rock pools and channels when water levels drop between November and May, exposing a vast honeycomb of sandstone formations stretching along the riverbank. The textures and patterns in the rock make for compelling abstract compositions when you shoot straight down, while wider shots looking along the river capture the scale of the formations against the slow-moving water and distant hills. Early morning is the best time to visit, when soft golden light rakes across the textured surfaces and mist sometimes sits over the river. A wide-angle lens works well for sweeping landscape shots, while a macro or short telephoto lets you isolate individual pools filled with clear water. Wear shoes with good grip as the rocks can be slippery, and aim to arrive well before other visitors since the site draws crowds by mid-morning.
