San Rafael Glacier is a massive tidewater glacier that calves directly into Laguna San Rafael, sending house-sized icebergs crashing into the water in a spectacle that is almost impossible to photograph badly. The deep blue ice face stretches roughly 70 meters high and over three kilometers wide, giving you an enormous subject to work with from multiple distances. You will typically arrive by boat, so use that vantage point to frame the glacier wall against the surrounding snowcapped peaks, or get closer to fill your frame with the fractured blue ice textures. A telephoto lens lets you isolate calving details and floating icebergs, while a wide angle captures the overwhelming scale of the scene. Overcast days are surprisingly ideal here, as diffused light brings out the intense blues in the ice without harsh shadows. Mornings tend to offer calmer water, which gives you cleaner reflections from drifting ice chunks. (Aysén Region, Patagonia, Chile)
