Santnerpasshütte sits high on the Santner Pass, tucked away on the west side of the Rosengarten in the Dolomites. A mountain guide from Predazzo originally built the hut in 1956, and it has been rebuilt numerous times over the years to now have a unique design reflecting its rugged surroundings. Rock stands all around it, with the Rosengartenspitze to one side and the Vajolet Towers below on the other. The rock walls here turn an amazing red at sunset, which is where the Rosengarten gots its name. Ideally plan in advance to stay the night if you can, so you can capture the incredible sunsets and early morning light. Plus the light comes and goes fast at both ends of the day so staying up here lets you set up well in advance of sunset/sunrise. Shooting the hut from across the plateau lets you place it with the rock stacked tall behind it, giving a sense of scale to your compositions. From the Gartl below, the Vajolet Towers line up in a row. Cloud pushing through the pass is also worth patiently waiting for so aim to take your time once you choose your favourite compositions to shoot. There are two ways up and neither is a stroll, but the effort is definitely worth it for these views. The easier one comes from the Fassa valley past the Vajolet and Gartl huts. Coming up from the Kölner Hütte means a via ferrata graded B and C, but a gondola does shortens the hike from that side. The hut runs through the summer only and takes bookings for beds so make sure to book ahead of time if you want to stay the night. (Tiers, South Tyrol, Italy)
