Saugatuck River Railroad Bridge
This historic swing bridge carries Metro-North's New Haven Line over the Saugatuck River, and its industrial steel framework, weathered textures, and low-slung profile over the water make it a compelling subject. You can shoot from the riverbank on either side, using the bridge's symmetrical span as a strong leading line or framing it against the sky for a more graphic, architectural composition. If you time your visit to catch a passing commuter train, the motion and scale add life to the frame; trains run frequently on this busy corridor, so waits are rarely long. Golden hour light in the morning or late afternoon brings out the warm tones in the aging metalwork and creates pleasing reflections on the river below. A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most compositions well, and a polarizing filter helps cut glare off the water. Parking is limited, so arrive early.
