Seattle Alley

Seattle Alley - Photo by sergee bee1 / 1

This narrow alley between First Ave S and Occidental Ave S offers a compelling urban tunnel shot, with the ornate Pioneer Building framing itself perfectly at the far end. The tight brick walls on either side create strong natural leading lines that draw the eye straight toward the historic facade, making it ideal for a compressed perspective with a mid-range or short telephoto lens in the 50-85mm range. Overcast days work especially well here since the alley is shaded and direct sunlight creates harsh contrast between the dark corridor and the bright street beyond; cloudy skies even out the exposure and bring out the texture in the brick. Early morning gives you the cleanest shots with minimal foot traffic and pedestrians. Position yourself centered in the alley and shoot low to emphasize depth, or experiment with slight off-center angles to include interesting foreground details on the walls.
