About Shark Rock Pier
Shark Rock Pier is a unique spot where it actually created the photogenic beach that surrounds it. The pier was built in 1990 to try an prevent the constant sand erosion every summer. It successfully interrupted the sand from drifting up the coast and instead led to the sand piling up behind it, and Hobie Beach appeared. The pier stretches out almost 150m straight out into Algoa Bay off Marine Drive, sitting a rows of tall square pillars. At low tide you can get down on the sand under the pier and line the whole length up running away from you out into the bay. Plus the pier sits quite high above the waterline, especially at low tide, so you can shoot the contrast between the rigid concrete structure and flowing water all around. Come back after dark and the whole area is even more photogenic when the pier is lit and the lights run all the way down the water in a long orange streak. Mornings are also a great time to be here. The bay faces east, so the sun comes straight up out of the water past the end of the pier creating amazing colours and a peaceful vibe. Parking is right there on Marine Drive, and the beach path stretches out in both directions so you can easily capture more of the coastline in one photography outing.
