About Sissu Waterfall

The Sissu Waterfall tumbles down a tallcliff on the far side of the Chandra River, straight across from Sissu village in Lahaul. Locals call it Palden Lhamo Dhar, after the protector deity of the gompa up the hill. You can see the whole fall from the highway. You can easily shoot it from a variety of locations in the village. The park around Sissu Lake give the clearest views and the lake puts water in your foreground. The water is at its strongest in July and August. Plus the waterfall looks completely different from December to February when the whole thing freezes into a column of ice. If you want to capture the waterfall close up you will have to cross the river, either by using the zip line from the village or using the footbridge downstream and hike in roughly a kilometre or two. The zip line does charge a fee, and bridge conditions change throughout the seasons so it's best ask in the village before making any crossing plans. The area around the base of the waterfall is considered sacred, so treat the area and other visitors with respect. Ideally plan to go in August if you want the most dynamic compositions or January if you want unique frozen shots. (Sissu, Himachal Pradesh, India)
