About Skinner Memorial Chapel
Skinner Memorial Chapel sits at the edge of the Carleton College campus with its square bell tower facing toward downtown Northfield. The tower rises in rough grey stone with a battlemented top, a pinnacle at each corner and a pointed doorway at the base with the college shield carved above it. From the sidewalk on College Street you capture the whole tower with a wide lens which lets you highlight the size of the tower compared to the rest of the chapel. Walk around to the campus side, gives you a long view down the nave with the tower behind it, or move in close with a telephoto on the carved shield and the arch stonework. Grey stone this rough goes dead in flat light but comes alive in low sun, so aim for late afternoon when the west face is lit and the deep window openings turn to hard shadow. Snow does the same job in winter, throwing light back up under the arches, and autumn puts orange maples in front of the grey walls. The campus is open and free to walk, with street parking a block away. This church has an active schedule which means the front doors are often propped open if you want to explore the interior.
