The Solidor Tower was built from 1369 to 1382 on a rocky ledge overlooking the outlet of the Rance River. It was essentially a dungeon composed of three towers connected by fortified walls, used on behalf of the Duke of Brittany to control the city of Saint-Malo. It was later converted into a prison in the 16th century, and since 1970 the tower has housed a museum dedicated to the history of long-distance navigators and those of Cape Horn.
