Solstadvatnet is an amazing hidden gem just over the hill beside Haukland Beach. This small lake sits tucked in between green slopes dotted with grey rocks rising on both sides. This photogenic gem is overflowing with composition options. You can head up the Mannen trail that branches off just before the lake, and the whole valley opens up below you. Using a wide lens lets you highlight the black water against the green slopes with the thin grey line of the road and the jagged ridge as an imposing backdrop all in one frame. Or you can head directly to the shoreline where big boulders lie scattered through the grass, and one square block sits right at the water's edge to make the perfect foreground. The water stays dark even on grey days, which makes the greens and the pale rock around it pop. Moody weather will give your compositions a whole new feel, making this a shooting location you will want to return to over and over. Since it's so dark up here it is an amazing spot to experiment with night and astrophotography. The lake sits along an easy uphill walk from Haukland Beach along a narrow paved road that is closed to cars. Make sure to plan lots of time for this shooting adventure since there are many amazing views packed into this whole area. (Leknes, Nordland, Norway)
