Sorihashi Bridge is the first thing you see when you enter Sumiyoshi Taisha in southern Osaka, and it stops you in your tracks. It is a steep, vermillion arched bridge that curves dramatically over a pond. The arch is sharp that steps were built directly into it. When the water is still, the reflection completes the oval and you get that unique loop that photographs incredibly well. The stone piers date back to the late 1500s, donated by Yododono as a prayer for her son Toyotomi Hideyori. For the best light, get here early just as the sun comes in low and warm across the bridge plus, you will mostly have the place to yourself. The side profile from the pond edge is the classic composition. Shoot it straight on and let the water do the work. Spring brings cherry blossoms framing the bridge, and autumn puts warm colour through the canopy behind it. Both seasons are worth planning around. The shrine grounds open at 6:00 or 6:30am depending on the season and close at 4:00pm, so this is very much a morning spot. Beyond the bridge, the shrine itself is worth exploring. The four main halls are National Treasures built in the ancient Sumiyoshi-zukuri style with straight roof lines, vermillion paint, and white walls. Plus it sees far fewer tourists than Osaka's bigger attractions, so you can shoot without fighting crowds. (Osaka, Japan)
