Spencer Glacier
Spencer Glacier is a dramatic tidewater-style glacier spilling down into a vivid iceberg-filled lake deep in the Chugach National Forest, giving you one of the most cinematic frozen landscapes accessible in Alaska. The glacier face and floating blue icebergs are the main subjects; position yourself along the gravel outwash plain near the lakeshore to frame the ice against the towering headwall, or get low to include foreground icebergs with the glacier rising behind them. Overcast days often work beautifully here, softening harsh contrasts and making the blues in the ice appear richer and more saturated. A wide-angle lens helps capture the full scale of the peaks and ice, while a telephoto lets you isolate textured glacier detail. The site is only reachable via the Alaska Railroad's Spencer Whistle Stop, so plan your timing around the train schedule and bring everything you need for a full day.
