Spruce Lake Bog is a glacially formed wetland nestled within the Kettle Moraine State Forest, offering a rare and atmospheric landscape of open water, floating sedge mats, and clusters of tamarack and black spruce that you rarely find in the Midwest. The bog's still, dark water creates strong reflections when conditions are calm, making early morning your best window before any wind picks up. Try shooting low from the shoreline to capture the mirrored tree line, or pull back with a wider lens to show the open sky above the treeline for dramatic cloud reflections. Fall is exceptional here when the tamaracks turn gold, a unique sight since they are one of the few deciduous conifers. Wear waterproof footwear as the ground near the water's edge can be soft and unstable, and plan for misty mornings when fog settles over the surface for an especially moody atmosphere.
