About Squirrel Point Light
Squirrel Point Light is one of four navigational aids dating back to 1895 along this stretch of the Kennebec River. This cute wooden lighthouse sits perched on the edge of the rocky shoreline looking out over the river. The tower is small, white and eight sided, with a quaint historic feel to the whole setting that makes it extra photogenic. There is lots of space around the lighthouse to experiment with working along the shoreline. you can get down on the rocks and shoot up at the tower with the river behind it. Further along the bank the whole lighthouse lines up against the water and the Phippsburg Congregational Church UCC adding to the background. Plus the lighthouse sits at the end of a boarded path so you can experiment with leading lines as you walk up to the tower. If you come near the end of the day, the sun goes down across the river in front of the light. You can keep it behind you for warm side light on the white boards, or turn into it and let the tower go dark against the water. Getting there does takes some effort, but the photographs are definitely worth the hike. You can park at the end of Bald Head Road and walk in about a mile through the woods on an easy to follow trail. (Arrowsic, Maine, United States)
