About St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church
St John Nepomucene Church is a small fieldstone church sitting on its own at a country crossroads east of East Jordan, up in northern Michigan. Bohemian settlers founded it in the 1880s and named it for the patron saint of Bohemia. Most of them had come from Prague, so they called their settlement Praga, and the place never grew past a scatter of farms. The church started out as a plain wooden building. Decades later the congregation faced the whole thing in fieldstone, that were most likely taken from their own fields. The stonework makes this rural chapel an incredible hidden gem and definitely worth the drive. Every stone is a different size and colour giving it a unique exterior that photographs differently depending on the light. The front faces west, which puts late afternoon and evening sun straight onto the entrance and up the steeple. A big maple stands right in front of the building and turns rich colours in the fall so you can shoot stone through orange and red tones. It is a working church, so make sure to respect the space and privacy of any worshippers on the grounds. A Michigan historical marker stands beside the path with the chapel's history.
