St. Joseph Benedictine Abbey
Tucked into the pine forests north of New Orleans, this serene Benedictine abbey offers photographers a striking blend of Romanesque architecture and Louisiana light. The red-brick church façade, flanked by twin towers, photographs beautifully in the soft hours of early morning when the low sun rakes across the stonework and the grounds are quiet. Walk the tree-lined path leading toward the entrance to use it as a natural leading line drawing the eye toward the towers. Inside, if access is permitted, the vaulted nave and stained glass windows reward a wide-angle lens in the 16-24mm range, particularly when afternoon light filters through the colored glass. The surrounding grounds include mature oaks and manicured gardens that add depth and context to wider establishing shots. Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds and respect the monastic schedule when planning your timing. (Saint Benedict, Louisiana, United States)
