St. Josephs Cathedral
This historic Catholic cathedral in downtown San Diego offers a classic example of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, with a symmetrical facade, ornate detailing, and a warm cream-toned exterior that photographs beautifully in the right light. Shoot from directly across the street on Third Avenue to capture the full facade with a moderate wide-angle or standard lens, around 24 to 35mm, keeping vertical lines straight by staying centered and at eye level. Early morning light from the east hits the front of the building well, bringing out the texture of the stonework and reducing harsh shadows, while overcast days provide even, diffused light that works well for architectural detail shots. The surrounding downtown streets are generally quiet in the early hours, giving you clean compositions without heavy foot traffic. Step back to include the towers in frame, or move in close to isolate the arched doorways and decorative elements. (San Diego, California, United States)
