About St. Mary's Catholic Church (Église Sainte-Marie)
St. Mary's Catholic Church (Église Sainte-Marie) is the wooden church you cannot miss while driving through La Minerve. It has been there since 1906, sitting right up against the road, with a square bell tower and open arches at the top where the bells hang. There is lots of space to stop along Chemin des Fondateurs and take it all in. You can easily capture the tower, the long wall of tall windows, and a bit of the village behind it all in one frame. Ideally try to come late in the day when the low sun crossing wood siding turns every board into a line of shadow, and highlights the historic feel of the building. Midday light does nothing for it, flat on the walls and glaring off the tin roof. The grounds are open to explore and experiment with various compositions. Photographing the inside is trickier. The parish only does visits by arrangement so you will have to reach out ahead of time if you want access to the interior. (La Minerve, Quebec, Canada)
