About St. Pölten Cathedral (Dom St. Pölten)
St. Pölten Cathedral (Dom St. Pölten) is a historic stone church sitting in the middle of the old town. It started out as the church of an Augustinian monastery, and then 1722 is was expanded and given the baroque makeover you see today. The simple stone exterior is hiding an amazing gem inside. The interior is covered with gold trim, painted marble and frescoes running the length of the barrel vaulted ceiling. If you come early in the day you should be able to find a spot near the back of the nave and line up the aisle toward the altar for the perfect leading lines and hints of symmetry. Make sure to take some time to look up and appreciate the intricate details of the painted ceiling. The old cloister on the north side is a quieter place to wander, lined with weathered gravestones and peaceful views. The tower looks out over the historic square and catches warm light through the late afternoon and into the evening. The square hosts a market on Thursdays and Saturdays, which can add a bit of local life to wider compositions if urban photography is more your style. The cathedral still serves an actuve community of worshippers so you may not be able to access the interior during services. (St. Pölten, Lower Austria, Austria)
