St. Raphael's Cathedral is a historic Gothic Revival brick church on Bluff Street in the old part of town. The congregation dates back to 1833, which makes it the oldest of any Christian denomination in Iowa, and the building was dedicated in 1861. Its central tower is imposing, standing tall over everything else on the street. To capture the whole tower in your frame, you'll have to cross the street into Cathedral Square where you'll have the space to experiment with your compositions. Along the sides, seven bays of tall pointed windows sit between shallow buttresses, and that rhythm really pops when the sun is low and spreading across the brick. Inside, rows of clustered wooden columns divide the space into three sections and give you a clean line straight down the centre aisle. Stained glass sits above the altar in the rear chapel. It's dark in there, so plan on bracing against a pew. The church is free to access but avoid Sundays when they whole area can get quite busy. (Dubuque, Iowa, USA)
