Stair Hole is a dramatic collapsed sea cave just west of Lulworth Cove, where centuries of wave erosion have punched natural arches through towering limestone cliffs, creating a chaotic tangle of folded rock strata that geologists call the Lulworth Crumple. The exposed layers of tilted and contorted limestone make for striking abstract compositions, especially when wet and reflecting light after rain. Shoot from the fenced viewing area above, using a wide angle to capture the full sweep of arches, churning water, and folded cliff faces, or zoom in tight on the tortured rock layers for detail shots. Overcast and stormy days genuinely outperform clear skies here, bringing out the texture and moody greens of the water. Early morning light on calm days can also reward patience. The site is a short, easy walk from the Lulworth Cove car park. Stay behind the fence as the cliff edges are unstable. (West Lulworth, Dorset, England)
