Stone Arched Bridge
This old stone arch bridge carries the Upper Charles Rail Trail over a quiet wooded stream, and its rough-hewn granite construction gives it a timeless, almost forgotten quality that photographs beautifully in any season. The classic composition is to position yourself below and to the side of the arch, using a wide angle lens to capture the full curve of the stonework with the stream and surrounding vegetation framing the shot. You can also walk onto the bridge itself and shoot straight down into the water, or use the trail as a leading line disappearing into the trees. Overcast days work especially well here since the forest canopy can create harsh shadows in direct sun; golden hour light filtering through the trees adds warmth without the contrast problems. The site is flat and easily accessible on foot from the rail trail, with no difficult terrain to navigate. (Holliston, Massachusetts, United States)
