Storforsen is an incredible series of rapids along a rocky section of the Pite River in Swedish Lapland. The sheer volume of water moving through here is something you feel as much as you see, and the sound alone is unforgettable. The rapids stretch out over 5km giving you lots of shooting opportunities as you explore the area. Boardwalks and observation ramps run right alongside, getting you close enough to feel the mist on your face while keeping things safe. Those walkways also double as great shooting platforms, giving you elevated and straight on angles over the churning water. The rapids used to be used to transport logs, and today the surroundings are part of a nature reserve with scenic trails winding through ancient forest. Away from the main rapids, the old riverbed has created a landscape of rocky cliffs, ravines, and carved stone pools that are all worth exploring with a camera. The rapids are at their most powerful in early summer (late June) when snow melt from the mountains reaches full force and the volume of water can more than triple. Winter brings a completely different look, with ice formations building along the edges while the centre keeps flowing even at minus 40. Northern lights are a real possibility on clear winter nights with the rapids roaring in the foreground. The reserve is free to visit year round. (Norrbottens län, Sweden)
