About Sun Tunnels

Sun Tunnels is an amazing hidden gem shooting location tucked away in Utah's Great Basin Desert. This unique piece of public art is made up of four huge concrete tubes laid out on the open desert floor by artist Nancy Holt. Each of the tubes is about 5m long and nearly 3m high, big enough to walk through without ducking. They were carefully places so the sun lines up through them at sunrise and sunset on the summer and winter solstices. Because of this placement the sun is almost centred for about ten days before and after each solstice, so you have some flexibility if your goal is to capture that shot. Holt also drilled holes through the top of each tube to match the stars of a different constellation. During the middle of the day is the perfect time to shoot the insides of the tubes, when sunlight shines through the holes and scatters bright spots of light across the curved grey concrete. The tubes sit close enough together that you can go inside one and use it to frame another, or step well back to show all four sitting alone on the flat, pale desert with the mountains behind. Since the artworks sits all alone in the desert, the night sky gets really dark, making it an amazing spot to experiment with astrophotography. This location is easily accessible along gravel roads just past Lucin, complete with a small parking area beside the tubes. Make sure to bring plenty of water and set out with a full tank of gas since this area is quite isolated. Ideally plan on staying from midday right through to dark to capture all the variations of the Sun Tunnels as the light changes. (Lucin, Utah, United States)
