Sunfong Temple is a Taoist temple dedicated to Nezha, and is the largest Nezha temple in Taiwan. The building dates back over 300 years, though it was relocated to its current site in 1971. The temple features colourful rooftops, elaborate carvings, and door guardians painted by the Taiwanese artist Pan Lu-Shui. Uniquely this temple is home to hundreds of red lanterns hanging in a beautiful canopy over the central courtyard. When they light up at dusk the entire space glows red. During the day the lanterns catch natural light filtering through from above, but the real magic happens around sunset when the red glow takes over. The temple has multiple floors with rooms dedicated to different deities, and when the upper levels are open there is an amazing view looking down through the lanterns. The temple is free to enter and open daily. It is about a ten minute walk from Sankuaicuo MRT station. Despite being so centrally located, it stays surprisingly quiet and feels like a hidden gem. After you are done exploring the temple Sanfong Central Street (a covered market selling dried goods and Taiwanese snacks) is a five minute walk away and definitely worth with a visit while you are in the area.
