Swiftwater Covered Bridge
Built in 1849, this single-span covered bridge crosses the Wild Ammonoosuc River in a classic New England setting that rewards patient photographers. The weathered red wooden exterior, the framing of the tunnel-like interior, and the river flowing beneath make for strong compositional options. Get down to the riverbank to shoot the bridge from water level, using the reflection and rocks in the foreground for a classic landscape frame; a wide to mid-range lens in the 24-50mm range works well here. The interior shot looking through to the bright opening on the far side is worth attempting, especially when foliage frames the exit. Overcast days soften harsh shadows on the structure, but golden hour light in autumn, when the surrounding trees are turning, is exceptional. The bridge is accessible off Valley Road and the bank is easy enough to navigate on foot. (Bath, New Hampshire, United States)
