About Szelim-barlang (Selim Cave)
Szelim-barlang (Selim Cave) is a huge open chamber cut into the rugged hillside with stunning views looking out over the valley below. This soaring cave rises roughly 18m above you, but feels even bigger when you are standing inside it. Two sections of the roof collapsed long ago, so daylight drops straight into the main chamber through the gaps. The main entrance is a rocky gate wide enough to frame the valley below. People sheltered here in prehistory and the cave has been strictly protected since the eighties, so make sure to leave it exactly as you found it. As you walk up from the car park you reach the ceiling holes before the cave itself. Pausing there to shoot down through them hints at the scale of the cave. Once you're inside, the shafts of light coming through those openings are fun to experiment as they change throughout the day. In order to emphasize the vast scale of the cave you'll want to add a person in the frame. The cave opening faces west toward town, so late afternoon is when the sun actually reaches into the mouth. Plus there's a window in the rock you can climb out through onto the edge of the hill too, and the view opens right across the valley from there. Getting up is easy, there is a fairly big car park by the Turul monument and from there the hike to the cave is just a few minutes along a well marked trail.
