About Ta' Lippija Tower
Up on the edge of Wardija Ridge above Ġnejna Bay, Ta' Lippija Tower is a small square watchtower of honey coloured limestone. It was originally built in 1637 as the first of the Lascaris towers, paid for out of the Grand Master's own pocket. It's a straight forward watchtower design, only two floors high with an open room on each and lookouts on top. The view from around the tower is amazing. The ridge looks to the west over the open sea, so the sun goes down straight in front of you and the limestone warms right up in the last hour. You can shoot it from below as you walk up the path with nothing but colourful sky behind it, then carry on past and turn back so the view opens up behind it. The bay sits below to the southwest, which lets you put the tower high in the frame and put the whole curve of the shoreline underneath it. Getting up here is a steep walk, but the views are definitely worth the effort! Paths climb from Ġnejna beach below or from the Għajn Tuffieħa side to the north. The inside isn't open, but the tower and the ridge are photogenic enough to fill an evening of shooting. Aim to be here late in the day when the heat drops off, the light arrives, and you'll likely have the ridge all to yourself. (Mġarr, Northern Region, Malta)
